Alexander the Great, who lived more than 2,300 years ago, remains one of history’s most fascinating figures. Rachel Kousser’s recent biography has been praised for its portrayal of his ruthless ambition, strategic brilliance, and charisma, and for its vivid depiction of the extraordinarily diverse world he conquered. In this salon, Kousser will describe what set Alexander apart in an era rife with ambitious and merciless leaders; explain how she uncovered the untold stories of those who shaped his rise; explore what can be learned from his failures as well as his successes; and reflect on what makes him relevant today. Kousser will also offer a behind-the-scenes look at her research, key discoveries, and writing journey—one that, like Alexander’s conquests, was not a solo endeavor, but a collaborative effort.
