Garrett Oliver
Garrett Oliver is the brewmaster of the Brooklyn Brewery, author of the best-selling The Brewmaster’s Table, and editor-in-chief of The Oxford Companion to Beer. Brewing craft beer since 1989, he has led more than 1,000 beer dinners and tastings in sixteen countries and is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost authorities on beer.
An original board member of Slow Food USA, he later became a councilor of Slow Food International. In 2014, he received the James Beard Award as the country’s top drinks professional.
In 2020, he founded the Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling (MJF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that funds technical education scholarships in brewing and distilling for people of color; he currently serves as its president. In 2022, he was “enthroned” by the Knights of the Brewer’s Fork of Belgium, descendants of the ancient brewers’ guild. In 2024, the MJF was named Brewbound “Cause of the Year” and VinePair “Non-Profit of the Year,” and his Brooklyn Fonio Rising Pale Ale was named Brewbound “Best New Product” of the year. Oliver lives in Brooklyn and travels worldwide.
