Brooklyn Grange @ Brooklyn Navy Yard

New York City has some of the largest rooftop farms in the world. In Brooklyn, twelve stories above the concrete, and unseen by most New Yorkers, farmers till three million pounds of soil while worms do their ancient work below and bees attend to tomatoes, peppers, oregano, and lavender. The view of Manhattan is sensational.

Tour Brooklyn Grange’s farm and learn how this enormous green oasis works, from composting and pollination to plant science and climate resilience. In a natural dye workshop, you’ll use plants growing nearby in the sky to explore the history and science of natural dyes and the environmental costs of fast fashion. Using farm-grown botanicals, you’ll design and dye a bandana of your own and wear a little of the rooftop farm home.
